Larry Echohawk is a member of the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma and a prominent Native American politician and lawyer. He was born on August 2, 1948, in Hobart, Oklahoma and grew up in the town of Farmington, New Mexico.
Echohawk received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University in 1970 and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Utah College of Law in 1973. He then began his legal career in Washington, D.C., working for the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Division of Indian Affairs.
In 1982, Echohawk returned to his home state of Idaho, where he served as the attorney general from 1991 to 1995, becoming the first Native American to hold statewide office in Idaho. He also served as the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 2009-2012 under President Barack Obama’s administration.
Echohawk is also known for his advocacy work on behalf of indigenous peoples' rights and has taught Native American law and policy at several universities. He has received numerous awards for his service and leadership in the Native American community.
